On Mauritius we drive on the left hand side.
To drive around in Mauritius you'll need an International Drivers Licence.
If you are planning to stay here for long period of time its better you
carry your valid driving license.
Mauritius driving has become one of the tough due to strict rules and regulations.
Mauritius Traffic do fine you on many grounds like drink and drive, over
speeding, wrong parkings.
In the country you can observe all the places as paid parking and some of
them which are marked with numbers mainly in Capital City Port-Louis is
a paid reserved Parking. If you happen to park the car in no parking areas,
you'll be fined approximately around 50$ an hour. So better be aware of
cops and the driving.
Prices for car rental are quite high. There are all sorts and types of cars available for rent, starting from little mini mokes till limousines.
The Street signs or traffic indicators are indicated to your left and right
sides of the roads. Country being small better you keep your eye on the
road and NO ENTRY zones. As mentioned earlier even driving in no entry zones
will be fined. Be aware in city limits never drive more than 40 KMs and
in Highways the maximum speed limit is around 80-90Kms. If you happen to
see the roads broadly clear, don't be exited there will be cops hiding in
the cane fields or even in the busstands.
When ever cops stops and asks for licence better show your license. Don't
you ever forget your license home. If you are not able to submit your license
on the required place. " Bad Luck boyz Fine! Fine Fine" so think
of an simple option. You can get lots of rented bicycles. Yeah if you are
staying in Flic-en-Flacq you can hire bicycles at Wolmar Store which is
opposite to Pearl Beach Hotel. Renting a bicycle will be fun and sure you
will all enjoy the cycling next to silver sand beaches.
Recently some master projects have been completed to bring some flow in the stagnant highways. For our small island we even do have highways with 3 lanes.
A mass transit is still under discussion. Bus lanes and Bridges are also in discussions.
If you cannot get along with that it's better to travel around with a Taxi or the local Buses. Else you can also rent Helicopters.
